The Rt. Rev. Linda Nicholls, area bishop of Trent-Durham, was elected coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Huron at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Ont. on Feb. 13. The diocese is located in the southwestern part of Ontario and has about 200 parishes.
Bishop Nicholls was elected among eight candidates as the first woman bishop in Huron after three ballots, acquiring a majority of the vote of both the laity and the clergy in Synod.
“I am delighted that people of Huron gathered in Synod have called the Rt. Rev. Linda Nicholls to the office of coadjutor bishop for the Diocese of Huron,” said the Bishop of Huron, the Rt. Rev. Robert Bennett, upon announcing the results. “She is a gifted and faithful leader who will help chart our future to that place where God-in-Christ wills us to be. I very much look forward to working with her.”
As coadjutor bishop, Bishop Nicholls will automatically become the 13th Bishop of Huron when Bishop Bennett retires.
Bishop Nicholls has been a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Toronto since 2008, serving as the area bishop of Trent-Durham. Previous to that, she served in three parishes in the diocese and was the national church’s co-ordinator of dialogue for Ethics, Interfaith Relations and Congregational Development. She is co-chair of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue in Canada.
